Research cooperation with dairy cooperatives: Easing the life of small-scale farmers in Kenya
Setting up cooperatives enables dairy farmers to influence milk prices and to find a way out of their dependence on middlemen. The resulting freedom increases production and yields fourfold, and enables the farners to manufacture dairy products like yoghurt. These structural changes have brought numerous benefits in many areas. The farmers’ cooperatives now sell their products for a better price. The locals have also seen how the environment, animals and people are in much better condition today. “We know something about the area and our farming, but we never felt that this is good”, a local farmer says. “Since men are not forced to earn money away from the farm, family life has improved and is more relaxing.”
