Knowledge for Development (www.k4d.ch) is the dynamic internet platform for evidence-based products emerging from the Swiss Programme for Research on Global Issues for Development (r4d programme, www.r4d.ch) and the Solution-Oriented Research for Development Programme (SOR4D, www.sor4d.ch). Knowledge for Development is curated by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) to publish and disseminate research findings in the form of videos, policy briefs, photo galleries, scientific articles, and other content.

The Swiss Programme for Research on Global Issues for Development (r4d programme) was a joint funding initiative by SDC and the SNSF. The r4d programme supported research aimed at solving global problems with a focus on least developed, low- and middle income countries. A total budget of CHF 97.6 million was available for the duration of the programme from 2012 to 2023 with a contribution by SDC of CHF 72 million and by SNSF of CHF 25.6 million.

The Solution-Oriented Research for Development Programme (SOR4D) is the new joint programme of the SDC and the SNSF that builds on experiences and lessons learnt in previous joint programmes. The SOR4D programme is being implemented in the “Decade of Action” that is accelerating efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda). The overarching goal of the SOR4D programme is to produce better knowledge, solutions and innovation by needs-driven, transdisciplinary research that opens up new ways for advancing sustainable development and reducing poverty in the least developed, low and lower middle-income countries. The first programme phase runs from 2021-2028 and the second programme phase from 2026 to 2031.
